This exhibition included authentic textiles that have been cherished and treasured in the homes of Portland’s Hellenic community.
Many of the items were created for bridal dowries (“prika”) and for use in the domestic life of Greece. They represent the traditions brought to the United States by immigrants. The textiles on display are diverse in design, structure and function. Objects include blankets, rugs, linens, tagari bags, crocheted lacework and colorfully embroidered tablecloths. The exhibition reflects how these objects were incorporated into the lives of the Greek people. As you view the exhibit, you will sense the deep devotion and love for family that is so characteristic of Greek culture.
Visit the Hellenic-American Cultural Center & Museum to view a complete slide show of this as well as any of the past exhibits.
