Marguerite’s World: The Evolution of an Artist

On the coast of Lesbos, Greece, painter Marguerite “Peggy” Frances Sylvia found beauty in the landscape of the coastal city Molivos. The final eleven years of her life were spent on the island of Lesbos, where she learned to paint. Over the decade Peggy lived on Lesbos, her style evolved, first in the style she called “birdnest”, or abstractions of bold color, and ultimately into what she described as “New Humanism.”

In Marguerite’s World – The Evolution of an Artist, Peggy has transformed these seemingly mundane scenes of everyday life of its inhabitants into a beautiful collection of community and memory. The paintings on display in this exhibition showcase the evolution of Marguerite Frances Sylvia’s artistic style, with examples from each year she spent in Molivos. Starting the collection with Molivos Farmhouse (1962), we travel through time until Return to Molivos (1973), acting as a subtle call back to where it all began. Through exploring themes, Peggy brings all her viewers into this feeling of proximity and closeness to the community around us. These are landscapes of life, not just nature.
