HACCM is pleased to announce the 2025 exhibition of paintings by Marguerite Frances Sylvia: Family Life ~ Molivos. The artist lived in the small village of Molivos, on the island of Lesbos in Greece. Though she herself was not Greek, Sylvia lived with the people of Molivos for many years in the 1960s and 1970s, and was integrated into the life of the small village. While the characters of the paintings on display are not Sylvia’s biological family members, they depict an intimacy that could have only been achieved by someone who had developed close, personal relationships with these people. It is clear that Sylvia was a part of the village family.
Marguerite Frances Sylvia (or “Peggy” as she was affectionately known) was a children’s apparel designer, painter, and world-traveler. Born in Rhode Island, and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Peggy traveled widely across Europe before ultimately settling in Molivos. HACCM is proud to care for over 90 of the artist’s paintings, donated by The Bobby and John Maslen Family.
