Follow the Thread: The Fabric of the Hellenic Spirit

This exhibit showcases folk art and textile legacy of Greece from the 17th century to the present day. The display includes examples of embroidery and weaving, as well as clothing and tapestries, many of which are a part of HACCM’s permanent collection and several which have been loaned by members of Portland’s Hellenic community. Follow the thread as it weaves a story of geography, history, and of course, the individuals who made, wore, or owned the pieces on display.

“One way we learn about the life and national spirit of a people is through their folk art, for in their handwork we find the true expression of their character and culture. Through their use of color and design we can appreciate their aesthetic sense, imagination, inherent taste, personality, local traditions, and historical experiences as well as their geographical surroundings”

-Joan Petrakis, The Needle Arts of Greece
