Greek culture and history are known to the world through what great Greek men said and did. Females in ancient and medieval times were mostly invisible and absent from documents. However, several women excelled and built esteemed names for themselves in the middle of patriarchal societies and claimed eminent positions in history and scholarship. Aspasia (5th century BC), Anna Komnene (11th/12th century AD) and Eleni Glykatzi Ahrweiler (1926-2026) surfaced from traditional anonymity and created unforgettable models for future generations of women. Their intelligence, insight, and ambition secured for them prestigious positions in the Greek world and in international scholarship.
Dr. Effie Piliouni Albrecht was born in Athens, Greece where she did her basic and university education. She studied English Literature and languages there and Linguistics at Cambridge University. She received her Master’s and PhD degrees from Auburn University, where she also taught for more than 25 years. She lives in Auburn, Alabama with her family.
